What Do You Do in an Emergency Dental Situation?

At Habashy Dental, we understand that dental emergencies can occur at any time, and we want to help our patients understand what to do if they are ever faced with a dental emergency so that they can get the help and care they need. In this blog article, our team goes through the most common types of dental emergencies that we see and what you should do if you are experiencing them.

#1 Inflammation and Swelling

This is usually a side-effect of a severe infection in your mouth, and at times, a dental infection can even be life-threatening. A dental abscess often causes swelling. Abscesses usually come along with a significant amount of pain and discomfort, but they can sometimes be painless. If you notice any swelling or inflammation in your mouth, contact a dentist in Palm Beach Gardens right away. They will be able to evaluate what is causing the swelling and provide effective treatment.

#2 Knocked-Out Tooth

If you have a knocked-out tooth, you need to act quickly. You must try to get to a dentist near you within thirty minutes to have the best chance of saving your tooth. Pick up your tooth carefully, and ensure that you do not touch the root. If the tooth is dirty, gently rinse it with lukewarm water. Attempt to place the tooth back into its socket right away. If you cannot do this, then place the tooth in a container of milk until you can get to an emergency dentist in Palm Beach Gardens.

#3 Lost Dental Restoration

If you have gotten composite fillings, you may eventually experience your fillings becoming dislodged. Like a knocked-out tooth, you need to try to save the composite filling material and keep it clean until you can visit a dentist. A dentist can either place the filling back into your mouth or provide you with new composite fillings.

#4 Chipped or Broken Tooth

If the cracked, chipped, or broken tooth is a front tooth, try to save the piece that broke off to bring to your dental appointment. Try to get to a dental office right away because a delay in treatment could lead to a dental abscess or loss of the tooth. There is often pain associated with breaking a tooth, but it can also be completely painless. Even if you do not feel any pain, you still need to seek immediate care from an emergency dentist near you.

#5 Toothache

There are many causes of toothache. A toothache can be caused by gum disease, dental abscess, cavities, or even bruxism (the clenching and grinding of teeth). Medications may help alleviate pain, but they will not get to the root of the problem, so you will still need to see a dentist as soon as possible. If you cannot see a dentist right away, you can take a combination of acetaminophen and ibuprofen to help with the pain, but you must have both a healthy liver and kidneys to take this combination of medications. Ensure that you do not go over the maximum recommended daily doses of these medications.
